hi guys, i have driven both of them. They are really not the same as far as feel. The 1200 is 50 pounds heavier but feels a lot heavier and not as agile. It gets about 30-40 mpg the 800 will give you 50-60 mpg. i think the 800 is very light on its feet. it sits abit higher than the 1200. The seat on the 800 feels fine for short distances but if you are going to hours you probably need and upgrade. The 800 has plenty of power and it is midrange. acceleration into traffic is brisk with nothing lacking. i took it up on the mountain roads and it carved much nicer than the 1200.

The new 1200 has five more hp but it feels much more powerful than that, as compared to the 2005 version. i would probably go with the 800, the power is there, it is lighter to ride, it carves the mountain roads and you dont need brakes just compression braking. i think the 800 is easier to ride, and it is a perfect womans bike if she can reach the ground. both will get you past a ton easily.

The 800 does very well off the road also, and carves well through the heavy stuff. Not as heavy duty as a KTM, but for most folks it will never be tasked past its capabilities. Both are stylish. i like it in the yellowjacket colors. Both can be had with bags.

The 800 also has an expensive upgrade that gives you additional gallons under the fax tank for two grand. The end result is mega fuel. i have to look at my notes for the numbers. i dont think you can go wrong with either one. for the money i would go for the 800.
